• 10-gauge, 0.135-in. (3.42-mm) fabricated steel deck top with added 10-gauge, 0.135-in. (3.42-mm) spindle mounting plate
• 7-gauge, 0.19-in. (4.8-mm) side skirts with reinforcement bar

Mower cut-height adjustment

A floating mower deck has several advantages over a fixed mower deck design:

• Follows ground contour more effectively for a more even cut
• Travels smoothly above the ground with minimal chance of scalping
• Easier to adjust the cutting height

Mower cutting height can be set from 1.5 in. (3.8 cm) to 4.5 in. (11.4 cm) in 0.5-in. (1.3-cm) increments:

• The free-floating deck gives a smoother, more level cut.
• Height-of-cut changes can be made without tools.
• Large handles are provided to facilitate lifting the mower deck for setting the cut height.
• Cut-height adjustment pins have 90-degree bend for easy removal and reinstallation.

Mower deck shields are easily removed with hand knobs for access to the drive belt and other service points:

• Easy-attach belt shields allow quick access for service.

Optional grass catcher

• No mower faceplate is needed. The catcher connects directly to standard mower deck features.

NOTE: The optional mulch and grass catcher attachments are not included in base equipment for the commercial walk-behind mower and must be ordered separately.

An optional mulching attachment and special mulching blades are available:

• The high-performance mulching attachment includes formed steel baffles to control the material for superior performance.
• Special mulching blades can also be used when side discharging, though overall cutting performance may be slightly less than with the standard blades.
• The mulching attachment allows for conversion of the mower deck so it can be used to perform the mulching function (grass or leaves).

Operating tips when mulching:

• Mow when grass is dry.
• Observe the one-third rule.
  • No more than one-third of the grass blade should be cut off at one time. This allows more efficient mulching and will promote the continued good health of the grass.
  • If the desired cut height cannot be achieved by cutting off one-third, or there is clumping of the clippings, it may be required to cut higher, wait a day, then lower the mower and make a second pass.
• Mow at proper intervals, approximately every four to five days.
• Always mow with sharp blades.
• Adjust ground speed to allow the mower deck to process the clippings effectively.

All of the controls are located within comfortable reach of the operator. Simplified operation of each control offers superior convenience, productivity, and safety:

• Color-coded and clearly marked levers, switches, and buttons enable simplified operation.
• Bilingual decals in English and Spanish are provided.
• The operator presence system requires that one of the bails must be depressed to operate the unit; the machine must be in neutral and the power take-off (PTO) must be disengaged to start.
  • Operator presence control levers are recessed into control handle when engaged, provides a smooth contour and comfortable handle to hold during operation.
• Separate choke and throttle – This takes the guesswork out of choke operation, with less chance of fowling the spark plugs.
• Electric PTO clutch on the engine powers the mower deck. The PTO switch on the dash is easy to see and use.

• Speed and steering controls are designed for ease of operation.
• Ergonomically designed control configuration on all units gives good operator comfort and leverage while driving.
• A speed-control lever is conveniently located in the center of the console and used to set maximum desired speed.

W36R, W48R, W52R, and W61R Mowers are equipped with an infinitely variable hydrostatic drive system with reverse, which does the following:

• Provides infinite ground-speed adjustments from 0 mph to 7.5 mph (0 km/h to 12.1 km/h) to meet the mowing application
• Enables a smoother transition from one speed to another 
• Gives a reverse speed of 3 mph (4.8 km/h), enabling the operator to back out of tight mowing areas and increase productivity

Wheel motors power the rear drive wheels. Steel oil tubes between the pumps and wheel motors are used for maximum reliability.

A transmission oil reservoir is located next to the fuel tank for easy checking.

Sight glass for checking oil level without opening hydraulic system minimizes risk of contamination entering the system.

The transmission oil filter is a replaceable spin-on type for easy service.

Safety features are designed into M and R Series commercial walk-behind mowers:

• Before the engine will start, the transmission speed control lever must be locked in neutral, the parking brake set, the power take-off (PTO) disengaged, and the key switch turned to the on position.
• Left- and right-hand speed/direction control levers are locked in neutral by spring-loaded knobs on the end of control handles.
  • The knob has a finger lever, making it easy to move to the locked position while holding the control lever in the neutral position.
  • The locking knob is spring loaded for easy release of the control levers.
• Separate choke and throttle – this takes the guesswork out of choke operation, and there is less chance of fouling the spark plugs.
• Color-coded and clearly marked switches and buttons are easy to find.

A JDLink™ M Modem connects a commercial mower to the John Deere Operations Center, which enables you to manage your fleet more efficiently, increase productivity, and reduce labor costs. With a modem and Operations Center, you are always connected to the work in progress and can make timely adjustments to keep your fleet mowing.

JDLink M Modem

A JDLink M Modem is standard equipment on model year 2024 and newer TerrainCut Front and Wide-Area Mowers.

A modem can be field installed on:

• Model year 2024 and newer Z700 ZTrak™ Mowers
• Model year 2024 and newer gasoline-powered Z900 ZTrak Mowers
• Model year 2024 and newer Z994R ZTrak Mowers
• Model year 2021 and newer Z997R ZTrak Mowers

John Deere Operations Center

The John Deere Operations Center tracks your fleet and provides tools to analyze mower data. The connected features vary by mower model.

Location and status

The JDLink M Modem regularly transmits the location and operational status of each mower in the fleet so you can monitor mowing progress in Operations Center.

• Location history-Display of map with current and past locations of each mower.
• GPS Speed-Maps each mower’s current speed, based on GPS location data, so you can target operator training.
• Hours of operation-Reports the time of day the vehicle has been operated.
• Geofencing-Alerts when a mower enters or exits a prescribed area, for example if the mower has been stolen or an operator entered an area that should not be mowed.
• Curfews-Alerts if the mower is operating outside prescribed times, for example residential areas with early-morning noise restrictions.

Engine hours

The modem regularly transmits the mower’s engine hours to inform maintenance planning and balance use.

• Sync-The mower reports actual engine hours to the Operations Center.
• Key-Engine hours are estimated by monitoring the key switch. Engine hours can be corrected in Operations Center.

Maintenance planner

Factory or custom maintenance plans can be established in Operations Center. Maintenance alerts are sent when engine hours reach maintenance intervals.

Machine Analyzer Tool

On select products, the modem reports the time the mower spent transporting, idling, and working. The Operations Center’s Machine Analyzer tool reports usage data which allows you to analyze operator behavior, identify causes of low productivity, and initiate corrective actions.

Fuel level

On select products, the modem reports the fuel level. On these products, an analysis of fuel consumption is available in the Operations Center Machine Analyzer Tool. Measuring fuel consumption enables you to address causes of excessive fuel use.

Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)

On select products, the modem transmits the trouble codes generated by the mower’s control units to the Operations Center. Addressing DTCs can reduce downtime and repair costs. For example, a low-engine oil pressure DTC can indicate an engine is low on oil. Addressing the issue can prevent costly downtime and repairs.

To help address issues quickly, when a DTC is generated, the Operations Center can display a push notification on the mobile app and send an email. Operations Center can also be configured to limit notifications to stop-level severity DTCs.

Service Advisor Remote

On select products, John Deere dealers can perform remote diagnostics, software programming, and adjustments without the cost of a service call.

Compatibility

A JDLink M Modem is standard equipment on model year 2024 and newer (SN 110,001-) TerrainCut Front Mowers and model year 2024 and newer (SN 690,001-) TerrainCut Wide-Area Mowers.

A JDLink M Modem can be field installed on the commercial mowing products listed below. Field installation attachments simplify modem installation, and include brackets, mounting hardware, harness, and instructions. Field installation requires a JDLink M Modem to be ordered separately. The field installation attachments include a wiring harness therefore the modem should be ordered with the less harness option code.

John Deere provides application-specific Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved field-installed propane conversion kits for specific John Deere commercial walk-behind mowers, QuikTrak Mowers, and commercial ZTrak™ Mowers. The conversion kits include all components required to convert the engines to operate on propane fuel. Single-tank or dual-tank brackets (depending on the vehicle) are provided for securely holding the propane tank(s) to the vehicle.

Propane tanks are not included.

An optional altitude kit is required when operating at altitudes above 2000 ft (610 m). The operator’s manual with the propane conversion kit provides further details. Parts must be ordered separately through John Deere Parts.

Propane facts:

• Propane is flammable and commonly used as a fuel.
• The molecular formula of propane is C3H8, and it is in the family of liquefied petroleum gases (LP gases). The other LP gases include butane, propylene, butadiene, butylene, isobutylene, and mixtures thereof.
• Propane is commonly available and has proven to be a dependable, safe, economical, and clean-burning fuel. It can be used as household fuel, industrial fuel, and fuel for internal combustion engines. Propane has been used as a fuel since 1910.
• At atmospheric pressure, propane boils at -44°F (-42.2°C), meaning it typically exists as a vapor. However, when contained under pressure, such as in a propane cylinder, it can exist as a liquid.
• Propane is naturally odorless, but includes an additive odorant, usually mercaptan, which gives it a distinct odor.
• Vapor propane is heavier than air, meaning it will settle in low areas such as along the ground or in drains.

 Advantages of John Deere propane conversion kits include:

• Reduced fuel costs up to 30 percent depending on fuel prices

 Optional tank configurations and sizes are available to provide operators the ability to tailor for run time:

  • The single-tank bracket is designed for one 20-lb (9.1-kg) Worthington tank.
    • Tank is not included.
• Model year 2023 and older QuikTrak Mowers have single-tank and dual-tank mounting options.
  • The single-tank, right-side bracket is designed for one 33-lb (15-kg) Worthington tank.
    • Tank is not included.
  • The dual-tank brackets are designed for two 20-lb (9.1-kg) Worthington tanks.
    • Tanks are not included.
• Model year 2024 and newer QuikTrak Mowers have only a dual-tank mounting option.
