    A. Power button

On the back side of the 4640 is the power button. The power button has two primary uses:

    1. Operation flexibility - ability to power off the display when the machine needs to remain running

    2. Display reset - if a hard reset is needed to re-boot the display, the operator can do so without keying off the machine by pressing the power button for more than 4 seconds

    B. External USB adapter port

    C. Ethernet port

Ethernet connectivity is required for Remote Display Access (RDA).

    D. Extended monitor port

A port is available on the backside of the 4640 Universal Display for connection to a secondary monitor, providing Gen 4 Extended Monitor compatibility.

    E. Antennas

The green antennas are located externally for connectivity purposes. The operator will not need to adjust these antennas after receiving the 4640 Universal Display. Antenna positioning does not affect operating performance.

    F. Machine connector

The machine connector port is the harness connection point for the machine and the 4640 Universal Display.

    Layout Manager applicationLayout Manager application

The 4640 features a modular-designed layout manager, so operators can easily create the page views that meet their needs. From the factory, machines are equipped with one guidance default run page. Run pages can be created and stored within the All Run Pages tab with no limit. A maximum number of 10 run pages can be added to the Active Set. The Active Set provides the ability to toggle through selected pages on the main screen. Toggling between run pages is as easy as swiping the screen or using the arrow buttons on the top right portion of the title bar.

    Users and access

Users and access allow the owner or manager to lock out certain functions to prevent operators from accessing or changing settings. Lock-out functions are managed with a defined pin for the administrator.

The 4640 Universal Display can be set to one of two profiles, administrator or operator. The administrator profile is always set to the full access group. This group allows unlimited access to all of the features and has the ability to lock and unlock features in the operator profile.

For users concerned with security there is also the secure pin code. This allows an administrator to require a passcode for any access to the display upon startup. Enabling this feature can help ensure that only the access the administrator approved is used on the display.

    On-screen help and diagnostic text

There are a number of different ways to get meaningful on-screen help when navigating the 4640 Universal Display. The help icon is located on the default shortcut bar on the bottom of the run page. This icon gives detailed information of all contents of the operating system. Simply select the help icon and navigate to the information section that is needed.

Additionally, application-based help is also available in all locations of the 4640 Universal Display. Simply click on the {i} icon available on the title bar to see more information on the application currently being used.

Diagnostic text and information throughout the operating system is available for better understanding of whether applications are operating as directed.

Mark areas of the field that need special attention or items that need to be addressed such as rocks, tile lines, or weed pressure. Flags previously recorded on the Gen 4 or GS3 2630 Display can be transferred between displays to ensure each operator is aware of upcoming field obstacles.

    Work monitor

The work monitor application displays the performance information about the task being performed by the machine. The user is shown averages, totals, and productivity of the machine, such as area worked, average working speed, and fuel usage. The values of the work monitor can be reset by the user at any time. Specific values of the work monitor can be configured by the user to be shown on a run page.

NOTE: The work monitor application replaces values found in the universal performance monitor with the GreenStar™ 3 (GS3) 2630 Display.

    Video capability

4640 Universal Displays are equipped with four video inputs. The operator has the ability to set a variety of triggers to activate the camera. The image will then appear on the 4640 Display. The camera (video observation system) is available through JD Parts. When used with a Gen 4 Extended Monitor, two independent camera views can be monitored simultaneously on each display. All harnessing, inputs, outputs, and software support Voyager® camera systems. Other camera systems will require third-party harnessing and converter for use.

John Deere 4640 Universal Display subscription model provides John Deere precision ag operators more choices in how they purchase precision ag applications. This gives flexibility in selecting the level of subscription that matches the operators’ needs year by year. John Deere AutoTrac™ and documentation are included in the purchase of the display.

Two subscriptions will be available with the 4640 Universal Display + AutoTrac Activation:

    • 4640 Premium 3.0 1-year subscription
      • Enables John Deere Section Control, Data Sync, AutoTrac RowSense™, and In-Field Data Sharing functionality for 1 year
    • 4640 Automation 3.0 1-year subscription
      • Enables Data Sync, John Deere Section Control, AutoTrac RowSense, In-Field Data Sharing, AutoTrac Turn Automation, AutoTrac Implement Guidance (passive guidance), and Machine Sync functionality for 1 year

Subscription-based precision ag offerings provide the following benefits:

    • Lower cost of entry to get started with display and subscriptions
    • Ability to try new applications for a year without having to commit to a permanent software license
    • Ability to match the cost of use with the revenue generated in the same fiscal year
    • Flexibility in selecting the level of subscription that best fits the needs of the business without the expense of a one-time software license purchase
  • Gen 4 Extended Monitor (left) and 4640 Universal Display (right)Gen 4 Extended Monitor (left) and 4640 Universal Display (right)

The Gen 4 Extended Monitor provides a secondary monitor solution for those producers who want two monitors to manage their machine and precision ag applications on their 4640 Universal Display. Adding the second monitor allows producers in display-intensive operations the ability to view and adjust more of their operations at once.

Leveraging the 4640 Universal Display with Extended Monitor provides the following benefits:

    • One easy-to-use system. Make adjustments on the go with either monitor in one operating system while having direct access to more run pages and information at all times.
    • The 4640 Universal Display is built on a foundation of making it easy to use for operators. Two monitors from the same system eliminates the potential for mismatched information and the need for separate software updates for different displays.
    • Maximize uptime and minimize setup time with quick and easy plug-and-play over the traditional dual-display set-up steps.
    • Customize the in-field office to increase viewable access to the 4640 Universal Display run pages as well as the flexible mounting location capability of the additional monitor.
    • Avoid costly mistakes during product application through direct access to information and adjustments.
  • This is the compatible equipment approved with the software update 19-1 release, and is subject to change with newer software updates. To ensure complete and proper compatibility, the most current version of implement control unit software, Gen 4 Display software, or compatible farm management information software (FMIS) should be used. Non-current software versions will require an update before support can be provided. Unapproved software version configurations will not be supported.

The software update 19-1 release is only compatible with 4600 CommandCenter™ v2 processors. Software update 17-2 is the last release that was compatible with 4600 v1 processors.

Server serial numbers are as follows:

    • v1 = RWG prefix

  • Wirelessly transfer data

John Deere Wireless Data Transfer (WDT) helps producers save time, money, and increase productivity through telematics-enabled data transfer via JDLink™ Connect wireless telematics. Wirelessly transfer setup, prescription, and documentation files securely between office, mobile devices, and 4640/4240 Universal Display or 4600/4200 CommandCenter™ Display, eliminating the need for USB transfer. This increases producer uptime and productivity, reducing the risk of data loss, and enabling easy data sharing and more timely decision making.

Through the John Deere Operations Center, producers are in control and can easily share files with a John Deere dealer and other trusted advisers.

    Wireless Data Transfer

With WDT, producers can manually send data wirelessly to the John Deere Operations Center; data is available to review in Files and then later in Field Analyzer and the MyOperations™ mobile app. To enable WDT on a Gen 4 Display, producers must manually navigate to the Menu, System, File Manager, Export and then begin selecting the data they want to send to the John Deere Operations Center.

NOTE: WDT on a Gen 4 Display does not include any auto send triggers similar to the GreenStar™ 3 2630 Display which automatically sent data after a change in client, farm or field.

Set-up files and prescriptions can be transferred wirelessly from the Operations Center to the 4600/4200 CommandCenter or 4640/4240 Universal Display anytime, eliminating trips to the machines’ locations and allowing for more timely completion of field operations. Modified setup files and prescriptions will not overwrite files currently on the Gen 4 Display; only new or modified information will be imported from the setup file.

    Requirements for WDT
    1. An active JDLink Connect subscription on a Modular Telematics Gateway (MTG)
    2. Organization set up in the John Deere Operations Center
    Data Sync

Data Sync automatically sends documentation data to John Deere Operations Center every 30 seconds. Producers have the opportunity to analyze data from completed fields or view where field work is in process, making it easier for producers to make operational decisions. Data is available to analyze from any internet-connected device to make important production decisions and give operations the ability to invoice work recently completed. There are triggers that make the data available within the John Deere Operations Center including: after a field has been completed, after new work has started, or a half hour after field work has been stopped.

    Requirements for Data Sync
    1. An active JDLink Connect subscription on an MTG
    2. Gen 4 CommandCenter Premium or Automation activation; 4640 Premium or 4640 Automation subscription; 4200 CommandCenter Data Sync and Section Control activation; or 4240 Data Sync and Section Control subscription

  • The Generation 4 CommandCenter™ and Gen 4 Universal Displays display are an AEF ISOBUS compatible display.

An easy plug and play between implements, displays, tractors, and other products is required today in daily business. This is why within agriculture and forestry, an industry standard, ISOBUS, is used for communication between these products.

From the ag industry, the Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation (AEF) was initiated in 2008 to have a common forum among manufacturers to define the ISOBUS standard further, define and conduct ISOBUS tests, accelerate adoption, label compatible products, and to communicate this to dealers and customers. John Deere is one of the seven founding members of AEF and is very engaged in the organization.

To better ensure ISOBUS compatibility, the AEF developed new functionalities, i.e., auxiliaries (AUX) and Task Controller Section Control (TC-SC,) in addition to the well-known universal terminal (UT). They are also the basis for the certification of ISOBUS products. An ISOBUS functionality can be described as an independent ISOBUS product and the concept is extendable for later additions of functionalities.

Gen 4 CommandCenter and Gen 4 Universal Displays support the following ISOBUS features:

    • 4600/4200 CommandCenter and 4640/4240 Universal Display:
      • Universal Terminal (UT)
-> ISOBUS sprayer, seeder, planter, fertilizer spreader, manure applicator, and many other implements can be operated through the UT functionality.
      • Task Controller Section Control (TC-SC)
-> With TC-SC, ISOBUS compliant implements like sprayers, seeders, planters, fertilizer spreaders, and manure tankers can be used with automatic Section Control.
      • Task Controller Basic (TC-Bas)
-> With TC-Bas, documentation with ISOBUS compliant implements in the standard data format of ISOXML is possible. Also, totals like area, amount, etc. are recorded directly from the implement.
      • Task Controller geo-based (TC-Geo)
-> With TC-Geo, location-based documentation with ISOBUS compliant implements in the standard data format of ISOXML is possible. Also, Client, Farm, Field, Boundary, Products, Crops (incl. Varieties), Prescriptions, Operators, Tasks, Comments are recorded directly from the implement.
      • Auxiliary Control (AUX-N)
-> With AUX-N, additional control elements that facilitate the operation of complex equipment, such as a joystick; also, the capability of controlling implement functions by means of an additional control element.

  • In order to utilize over-the-air controller reprogramming, software update 18-1 needs to download in the background:

    • Need 17-2 to download 18-1 in background
    • Download in background is only for the Gen 4 operating system
    • Controllers download and install in the foreground

Once software update 18-1 is installed, users are able to reprogram precision farming controllers (AMS controllers) over the air:

    • GreenStar™ Rate Controller (liquid)
    • StarFire™ 3000 Receiver
    • StarFire 6000 Receiver
    • AutoTrac™ Universal 200 steering system
    • Application Controller 1100
      • iGrade™ system
      • Active Implement Guidance
      • Distance Trip
    • Over-the-air activations

    Precision farming Ethernet reprogramming

    • The Gen 4 display can perform other-the-air or USB reprogramming of the StarFire 6000 Integrated Receiver over Ethernet.
    • This reduces StarFire 6000 Integrated Receiver reprogramming times from about 30-45 minutes to about 5-10 minutes.
What is over-the-air reprogramming of precision farming devices

Precision farming devices are attachable components (such as the StarFire 6000 Receiver, GreenStar Rate Controller, and AutoTrac Universal steering system) that complete or extend a producer’s precision farming solutions.

Producers have the power to reprogram every* AMS component connected to their vehicle, over the air, without the need for a USB stick or separate download program:

    • No more need for a USB stick
    • No more need for a Mac® or PC laptop
    • No more need for GreenStar Live Update
    • No more need for the MyJohnDeere™ portal Software Manager
    • No more need to remember to bring all of this hardware, nor to remember how to use all of these different tools

Over-the-air reprogramming allows for fast, simple, and convenient updates that offer improved performance and new features when producer’s need them, when they want them, and when they are ready for them.

*NOTE: Other AMS displays (such as the Original GreenStar Display, GreenStar 2 1800, GreenStar 2 2600, and GreenStar 3 2630) cannot be reprogrammed by the Gen 4 display. Modular Telematics Gateway and non-AMS components, such as the tractor radio, are not updateable by the Gen 4 display.

    How it works

Ensure the Gen 4 display is connected to one of the following:

    • A 4640 Universal Display with an active Wi-Fi connection
    • An MTG connected to an active Wi-Fi connection
    • An MTG in good cellular coverage
      • NOTE: An active JDLink subscription is required to use the MTG cellular connection.

The Gen 4 display’s internet connection status can be review from Status Center or the Wireless Settings application.

Ensure the Gen 4 display is connected to the precision farming device that is to be reprogrammed. The Gen 4 display’s connection status to the precision farming device can be reviewed by looking for the device in the ISOBUS VT application or in the Diagnostics Center application.

    • From the Gen 4 display, open Software Manager:
      • Menu > System tab > Software Manager
      • Check for updates online > for other devices
      • Review available updates
        • Select the update that should be pushed to the precision farming device.
        • Click install.
        • Keep the key switch in the ON or ACCESSORY position during reprogramming.
        • An active internet connection is required during the first pinwheel; users can move into more remote areas after the download pinwheel completes.

Producers have asked for a way to better secure their John Deere devices from improper use and thefts. With the 19-1 software update, John Deere added an enhancement to the user interface of the Gen 4 4240 and 4640 Universal Displays.

With this solution, producers have the choice to enable the security PIN code feature and set up a unique four-digit PIN code to enable and unlock their device, similar to a mobile device. Enabling this code will allow only users with the defined PIN code to access the device when it powers on.

This feature has two levels of access that can be defined. An administrator PIN code must be defined to enable the feature and should be used by the farm manager. A second optional operator PIN code can be defined for usage by operators of the machine.

  • Over-the-air activations were enabled with the 18-1 software update to the Gen 4 displays. With that software update or newer, a John Deere dealer can send activations to a Gen 4 display without leaving the office. Over-the-air activations also eliminate the need to manually enter long activation codes like was done previously. This also eliminates multiple trips between the cab and the farm office to enter codes and verify completion.

NOTE: Over-the-air activations requires a current JDLink™ Connect subscription and Mobile Telematics Gateway (MTG). Planter and platform activations and subscriptions cannot be updated over-the-air.
