5 Must Ask Questions Before Buying Pre-Owned Equipment

Posted on

It is important to know what exactly you need and what you are getting when buying pre-owned equipment. These questions will help you get a better understanding of what to look and ask for.

What do you need?

Do you need something to mow the lawn, move dirt, push snow, plow, or something else entirely? While some farms may need a 150+ HP tractor for big jobs, while other smaller property owners may just need a smaller compact utility tractor to do chores around the property.

How old do you want your new piece to be?

Do you want a tractor that’s only one year old with only a few hours, or are you okay with more hours and a couple extra years, but potentially having a lower price tag? Two of the biggest factors when looking at this is any remaining warranty options, as well as the expected lifetime/life span of your new purchase.

What’s the budget?

How much money do you want to spend on your new equipment? Do you have a trade in and what is it worth? Your budget plays an important role in and will possibly help determine the equipment quality, and/or age & hours. Along with your budget you will need to decide if you are going to finance your new equipment.

Do you need any attachments or accessories?

Do you need pallet forks to go along with your bucket? Do you need a new rotary cutter for your utility tractor? Do you need a backhoe on your property? Do you need something extra for the cab/operator’s station of your new tractor? Do you NEED these attachments now, or can they wait until a later time? These are all important questions to ask yourself.

What else is included with this used equipment purchase?

Are any maintenance needs included, and how often will maintenance be needed? Is there any kind of warranty (remaining factory or dealership warranty) that can be added?

If I buy this used piece, will I be treated the same from the dealership as if I bought the new one (The answer is yes at Reynolds)
